New in 2.0

Now you can play solo — and compete.

Version 2.0 is the biggest update since launch. Play the word chain on your own in a fast score attack, climb leaderboards that reset fresh every week, take on a worldwide Daily Gauntlet, and challenge friends head-to-head — no account, no subscription, no ads.

Solo score attack

Solo Score Attack

Play on your own two ways: Chain, a steady build where every correct word grows your streak multiplier, or Blitz, all-out speed against a tight clock. Keep your streak alive to raise your multiplier, earn a Streak Shield that absorbs your first slip, and chase a new personal best on every run — with one-tap rematch.

Daily Gauntlet

Daily Gauntlet

A fresh shared category every day — the same puzzle for every player worldwide. Build a daily streak, climb the global daily board, and share a spoiler-free result card. Come back tomorrow for a new one.

Leaderboards and divisions

Leaderboards & Divisions

Compete across three boards — This Week, All-Time, and a pool-neutral Skill board — with your friends ranked first. Climb the Caller League from Bronze up to the top tier and track your global rank. Weekly boards reset every Monday, so every week is a fresh chance to win.

Challenge friends

Challenge Your Friends

Send a head-to-head challenge straight from your results screen and settle who's the better caller. When a friend beats your score you get pinged to win it back — built on Apple's in-system Challenges, so there's no separate account to set up.

Features

Everything you need for a great game night.

Voice Input

Voice Input

Just speak your answer. On-device Apple speech recognition (SFSpeechRecognizer) validates each word locally — no network round-trip, no transcript leaves the device. Type instead if you prefer.

13 Categories

Countries, World Capitals, Periodic Elements, Animals, Dog Breeds, Sports, Car Brands, Musical Instruments, Mythical Creatures, Cartoon Characters, Football Clubs, Basketball Teams, and an unlockable School category. Pick one or stack several — the word pool merges and deduplicates automatically.

How to Play

How do you start a game?

  1. 01

    Choose one or more categories

Pick from Countries, World Capitals, Periodic Elements, Animals, Dog Breeds, Sports, Car Brands, Musical Instruments, Mythical Creatures, Cartoon Characters, or School. Stack several at once — the word pool merges automatically.

  2. 02

    Add players

Enter names for 2 to 8 players on one device. Or add AI opponents at Easy, Hard, or Nightmare difficulty if you want a solo challenge. For remote play, open a Game Center party and share the code.

  3. 03

A word appears — last letter highlighted

The starting word is shown on screen with its last letter clearly highlighted so everyone knows what comes next.

  4. 04

Say your answer (or type it)

Speak a word starting with that highlighted letter. Tap the mic and talk — speech recognition does the rest. Typing is always an option too.

  5. 05

    Beat the timer

Answer before time runs out. Timer difficulty ranges from a relaxed 30 seconds (Easy) down to a brutal 10 seconds (Insane).

  6. 06

    Don't repeat words

Every word used is tracked. Repeating one gets you eliminated — so keep thinking of new ones as the round goes on.

  7. 07

    Last player standing wins

Run out of time or repeat a word? You're out. The last player still in the round takes the round win. Play best-of sessions for a full match.

FAQ

Common questions.

Last Letter is available on iPhone and iPad running iOS 26 or later. iPad features a dedicated layout with landscape and portrait modes that adapts to every screen size — landscape shows a three-column view, portrait uses a card-based layout.
Yes — Solo is a single-player score-attack mode added in version 2.0. Play Chain (build a streak multiplier on the last-letter rule) or Blitz (pure speed against a tight clock), chase a personal best, and post competitive runs to weekly and all-time leaderboards. You can also take on the worldwide Daily Gauntlet and challenge a friend to beat your run. Prefer company? Play against AI opponents at Easy, Hard, or Nightmare.
Last Letter uses Apple's built-in on-device speech recognition to listen for your answer in real time. Just tap the microphone and speak your word. No internet connection is needed for voice input. If you prefer, you can always type your answer instead.
Yes. Last Letter supports online multiplayer through Game Center. Host a game and share a party code with your friends, or join a game someone else is hosting. You just need an Apple ID — no separate account or subscription required.
Connect to any AirPlay-compatible display — Apple TV, a smart TV with AirPlay, or a compatible monitor — and the game will cast to the big screen. Great for parties where everyone around the room can watch the action unfold.
Last Letter is completely free to download and play. There are no ads and no in-app purchases. The full game — all 13 categories, 14 languages, Solo score attack, the Daily Gauntlet, leaderboards, all multiplayer modes, AI opponents, and every feature — is available at no cost.
There are two independent difficulty systems. Game difficulty controls the countdown timer — Easy gives 30 seconds per turn, Normal gives 20, Hard gives 15, and Insane gives 10. AI difficulty controls how the computer opponents behave — Easy, Hard, and Nightmare. You set them separately to fine-tune the challenge.
14 languages, each with native on-device voice recognition and locale-appropriate puzzle content: English, Greek, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish. The UI language is auto-detected on first launch. The PASS command is localised in each language (e.g. passen, πάσο, paso, passer). Accented letters are normalised for correct matching (Greek "Ήλιο", Portuguese "São Paulo").
There are 39 Game Center achievements worth a total of 1,000 points. They span every mode — your first correct word, winning 100 games, hitting a high streak multiplier in Solo, clearing a category in Blitz, issuing your first friend Challenge, and category-specific unlocks like naming 20+ football clubs or basketball teams in a single run. Progress is tracked across Solo, local, AI, and online play.
No — local play and voice recognition work fully offline; speech is processed on-device by Apple's SFSpeechRecognizer. Online multiplayer through Game Center requires an internet connection.
